Traffic Operation - Illegal E-bikes |

|
Good afternoon,
On Monday 28 September, officers from the Putney Safer Neighbourhood Teams worked alongside Roads Policing colleagues as part of an operation targeting e-bikes - along Putney Highstreet and Putney Bridge Road - that have been manufactured or modified so they no longer met the legal requirements for an Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC).
The operation today saw 30 bicycles and scooters checked with 19 being seized for non-compliance with the regulations. Officers also seized one car for no insurance and driving licence with the driver being arrested as they provided a positive salvia specimen for a controlled drug.
Under the current EAPC rules, an e-bike must have pedals capable of propelling it, a motor with a maximum continuous rated power of 250 watts, and electrical assistance must cut out when the bike reaches 15.5mph (25km/h). If an e-bike does not meet these requirements, it is not classed as an EAPC and may instead be treated as a moped or motorcycle, meaning additional legal requirements can apply. What Makes an E-Bike Illegal? An e-bike is illegal for public road or pavement use if it:
The Putney SNT will continue working with Roads Policing colleagues to tackle vehicles being used unlawfully and to improve road safety. This operation is one of a number planned across Wandsworth.
🔥 Lithium-ion battery safety 🔥 Lithium-ion batteries used in e-bikes can present a serious fire risk if they are damaged, faulty, poorly manufactured, overcharged or used with an incompatible charger. London Fire Brigade advises using the correct charger, never charging a damaged battery, allowing batteries to cool before charging and never leaving a battery charging unattended or while you are asleep. Keep charging areas clear and never obstruct your escape route. (London Fire Brigade) - London Fire Brigade – E-bike and e-scooter fire safety advice
